My new 12x DVD burner will only burn at 2x

This is a problem that has a multi-stepped solution.

1. Make sure you are using an 80 wire ide cable, not the old 40 wire ones that we are used to using for CD and DVD devices. The old cables are not capable of supporting the higher speeds of today’s burners.

2. Make sure that the IDE channel that your burner is on, has “DMA if Available” enabled as the transfer mode, and that the Current Transfer Mode is “Ultra DMA mode”
If this is set to PIO mode, it will burn at 2x (about 30mins for a full DVD), and cause significant slowdown on your machine at the same time.

If your Transfer mode IS set to DMA if available, and you’re still getting PIO mode as the current transfer mode, you may need to update your IDE drivers. These updates can be found on the website for the manufacturer of your motherboard.

3. If all of the above still doesn’t work, leave all the settings as they are, and update your bios to the latest version. Again, the bios and instructions on how to update the bios can be found on the website for your motherboard manufacturer.

Note: Follow the instructions from the manufacturer very carefully here. Failure to follow these instructions to the letter can result in your computer becoming unusable!
